Case Study
"Eye see you" was a fun little project I got to work on during my
co-op placement. I was able to complete my placement in Ottawa
at a local shop known as, On Scene Fx. During my time there I was
introduced to a new technique for eye making. The idea for this
project was to make a resin eyeball and then create the gorey socket
that you see behind it.

Before we could begin we decided to get advice from the
shop owner, who also suggested watching tutorials from notable
effects artists online.

We then started the project by using a premade eye mold, this
helped save time on the mold making process. The eye was casted
in Smooth-On's Crystal Clear 200 resin. Once cured the painting
process could begin. This specific method requires you to go in with
either an airbrush or fine detail brush and diluted acrylic paint. I personally decided to go with a bright blue toned eye colour. The idea was to layer on washes of colours, and create unique x and y patterns with a small brush to simulate the small lines you see on the human iris. Sealing each layer with crystal clear gloss as you go.

The challenging part came next, when deciding how to create the socket. The technique chosen was to create a silicone socket and adhere it to the back of the eye, the main concern was that silicone doesn't typically bond with many things other than itself. The solution the shop owner came up with, was to sand down the back of the resin eye and adhere burlap to the back using any form of super glue. You then have a porous surface for the silicone to cure and adhere to. The silicone was tinted using various shades of red, brown and yellow silicone pigments.

The final step was to add some gorey looking blood and take some fun photos! This was an exciting project that had me thinking outside the box in terms of applying techniques I hadn't had a chance to use before.
